The Nairobi Giraffe centre
Overview
Tour Duration: Half day.
Located in Langata 40 Minutes drive, approximately 15 km from the Nairobi City centre, The Giraffe centre is an African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. (AFEW) it is the home of the endangered Rothschild Giraffe species which is a subspecies that is only found in the grasslands of East Africa.
The fund was founded in 1979 by a British couple Betty and Jock Leslie Melville by raising 2 giraffes at their home in (Now well Known Giraffe Manor hotel) in efforts to save the species from human encroachment and mass hunting. Today the population has raised to over 300 Rothschild Giraffe safe and breeding well in various Kenyan national parks herds have also been introduced to other conservancies in the country such as the Soysambu Ranch in the Great Rift Valley, Kigio Conservancy and the Sergoit Ranch in the Mount Elgon region.

Attend the information centre

Feeding the giraffes
Perhaps, the most exciting part of the experience, you’ll be handed a small bowl of pellets, and walk to the lower deck to feed the giraffes. While at it you are advised not to get too close to the side of the giraffe’s to prevent getting head-butted.

Spare that extra coin and buy a cup of tea or coffee at the coffee house it does go a long way in supporting the conservation efforts at the centre.
Explore the Nature Trail Sanctuary
Enjoy a stroll, or hike to a serene 1.5-kilometre nature for a chance to spot species of bird you can spot and other smaller animals such as dik dik and squirrel. Other attractions include on the trail include the Gogo River that flows from the Ngong Hills you can also walk up to the View Point for breathtaking views of Ngong hills.

An early visit is recommended to avoid meeting up with crowds later in the day.

An early morning with a beautiful sunrise, as you take your breakfast. On this day you shall depart for excursions at Giraffe centre sanctuary and hand-feed the gentle endangered Rothschild giraffes. The giraffes, are not for entertainment to guests, but to breed them for reintroduction into the wild. Lunch will be served at one of the best Nairobi Restaurants. Later drive back to your hotel for overnight stay.
