FAQs About the 10 Days Kenya Safari
The safari covers several of Kenya’s major wildlife destinations, with driving distances spread across the itinerary rather than making long, exhausting transfers in a single day. The exact kilometres can vary depending on the accommodation, route and road conditions, but the itinerary is deliberately designed to break up the longer journeys with overnight stays and safari experiences along the way.
Rather than driving directly from Ol Pejeta to Maasai Mara, which is a long journey, we break up the distance by spending a night at Lake Nakuru National Park. This allows you to enjoy a game drive in Nakuru while also making the overall safari more comfortable and enjoyable. The following day, you continue from Lake Nakuru to the Maasai Mara.
The journey from Maasai Mara to Amboseli is another long cross-country transfer. Instead of spending most of the day driving directly between the two destinations, we place Lake Naivasha in between. You travel from the Mara to Naivasha, spend the night around the lake and can enjoy an optional boat experience before continuing to Amboseli the following day. This makes the route more relaxed and gives you another opportunity to experience Kenya’s Great Rift Valley.
Nairobi to Ol Pejeta is approximately 200–220 km, depending on the route and exact location of your accommodation. The journey normally takes around 4–5 hours, allowing for road conditions and stops.
The distance from Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru is approximately 180–200 km, making it a much more manageable transfer than combining Ol Pejeta and Maasai Mara in one long driving day.
Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara is approximately 250–280 km, depending on the route and camp location. The journey takes several hours, which is why we include a game drive in Lake Nakuru before continuing to the Mara.
The distance between Maasai Mara and Lake Naivasha is approximately 180–220 km, depending on your starting point in the Mara and accommodation in Naivasha. The journey provides a natural break between the Mara and the longer journey towards Amboseli.
Lake Naivasha to Amboseli is approximately 300–330 km by road. This is one of the longer transfers on the itinerary, but breaking the journey with a night at Naivasha means you do not have to drive directly from the Maasai Mara to Amboseli in one day.
Amboseli to Nairobi is approximately 220–250 km, with the journey to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) generally taking around 4–5 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and your departure time.
The route is intentionally designed around distance, comfort and safari time. Instead of trying to cover Kenya’s major destinations through a series of very long driving days, we use Lake Nakuru to break the journey between Ol Pejeta and Maasai Mara, and Lake Naivasha to break the journey between Maasai Mara and Amboseli. This gives you more time to enjoy each destination while making the overall 10 Days Kenya Safari more comfortable and rewarding
